Day 1 (Fri) Day of Arrival
You are collected from the airport at Egilsstaðir or the Jökulsá á Brú bus stop.
Time to get to know the farm and first ride into the surrounding countryside, e.g. to the seals (approx. 1 - 3 hours).
Day 2 (Sat) Day of Arrival and Riding
If necessary, we will also collect guest from the airport and the bus stop on this day. We then ride into the surrounding countryside to familiarise ourselves with the horses and to practise riding on a near-horse.
Day 3 (Sun) Húsey - Galtastaðir
The ride today takes us from Húsey to the peat farm at Galtastaðir. After leaving the Húsey land, we will follow the old "mail path" upstream along the Jökulsá river. Horses and riders rest near a small stream, after which we ride across the plateau. We pass a lake with many ducks and can marvel at the amazing birdlife and plants while riding along. We arrive in Galtastaðir around evening time. We visit the old peat farm and can imagine what life on the land must have been like 100 years ago. After a light snack at Kalli's, who lives at the farm, we take our leave of the horses, which remain at Galtastaðir overnight. We return to Húsey by car.
Day 4 (Mon) Galtastaðir - Hóll
In the morning we drive to Galtastaðir by car. Along the way we stop briefly at Geirstaðir, where we can see one of the oldest churches dating back to 940 - 960. The church was rebuilt from peat in 2000. From Galtastaðir we travel across marshland to the bridge over the glacial river of Lagarfljót. We rest here for a while and can see the hydroelectric power station and its salmon leap. On the other side we ride on "ancient paths" to Húsey's neighbouring farmstead of Hóll. Light refreshment is served here. The horses remain at Hóll and we take a boat across the Lagarfljót to Húsey.
Day 5 (Tue) Beach Ride
We take the boat across the river to Hóll, where the horses are waiting for us. We ride along the Lagarfljót through meadows, tidelands and dunes towards the sea. We reach the mouth of the river, where hundreds of seals can often be found. If we are lucky we will also see whales. We continue through the fine sand of the headland until we arrive at the place where the Jökulsá and the Lagarfljót flow into the sea. We enjoy the sea air and then ride back to Hóll, where we have time for some light refreshment with the farmer and his family. We then return to Húsey by boat.
Day 6 (Wed) Hóll - Húsey
Our last boat crossing to Hóll. From there we ride to the Kirkjubær country church, which is 152 years old. There we stop for a rest and let the horses graze a little while we look at the church. We then follow the highland path to a small waterfall. Our ride takes us past the Elves' Rock and a former sheep pen where a troll once wrought havoc. A traditional Icelandic meal is waiting for us when we arrive at Húsey. And the farmer tells stories about elves, trolls and the household spirit.
Day 7 (Thu) Day of Departure
Unfortunately this is the day when many of our guests have to say farewell to Húsey and the horses. They are taken to the airport and the bus on request. Anyone staying on at Húsey can ride out to the salmon and trout nets or simply enjoy the day in the conservatory, which offers a spectacular view.
